Is God Your Walking Buddy?

Genesis 5:21-24

Verse 24  Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

Walking is more fun with a friend to chat with.  It is a great time to build a deeper relationship and to get exercise at the same time.  Our passage today is about a man who walked with God although not necessarily in a physical way.

Enoch was not the first person to walk with God.  God seems to have walked in the Garden of Eden with Enoch’s great, great, great, great grandpa and grandma.  They knew God in an intimate way that they broke with disobedience.  After Adam and Eve were kicked out of Eden we don’t read about God having that same relationship with them.  In fact the next time we read about God talking to humans is when He is talking to Cain about his gift not being acceptable.  But things are different with Enoch.

What does it take to walk with someone?  For one thing, it takes going in the same direction.  When we read that Enoch walked faithfully with God we know that he wasn’t walking his own direction, he was walking God’s.  So what does it mean to walk in God’s direction?  How do we know which direction God is going?  Well, it takes relationship.  Have you ever watched two people who have worked or lived together for many years?  It is like they know what the other person is thinking and how they are going to move and they work to assist or move out of the way with little to no words exchanged.  That is how it was with Enoch in his relationship with God.  But how can we have this kind of a relationship with God?

The depth of our relationship with God is evidenced in how we walk with Him and in His way.  Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”  It isn’t enough to call Him our friend (or Lord or Master or…) if we aren’t tending to the relationship by obeying Him.  To be in an intimate relationship with God takes intentionality on our part.  It is seeking time with Him and making time with Him.  It is walking in step with Him day in and day out.  Enoch had that; he walked faithfully with God and we can too.

Making It Personal

What steps do you need to make to be in step with God?  What things in your life keep you from walking close to Him?  Do you have a daily appointment with Him?

Making It Personal Kids

Do you know what it means to walk in step with someone?  It is to take the same step they are at the same time.  If you have siblings try having a 3-legged race by pairing up and tying one of your legs to your teammate’s leg.  If you don’t have siblings trying walking 3-legged with your mom or dad.

Closing Prayer

Father, we want to walk with You.  Please convict us of the things in our lives that are keeping us from being close enough to You walk faithfully.  Please guide us to be in step with You.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
